FAQ — Marine Radio Licence & MMSI Australia

Question 1

What is a Marine Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency?

Accepted Answer

The Marine Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP) is the ACMA-recognised licence required to legally operate a marine VHF radio in Australian waters. It is mandatory for anyone who operates a radio on a vessel — recreational or commercial.

Question 2

Do I legally need a marine radio licence?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Under Australian law, anyone who operates a marine radio transmitter must hold a valid licence. This applies to recreational boaters, fishers, sailors, and commercial vessel operators. Operating without a licence can result in significant fines.

Question 3

How long does the licence last?

Accepted Answer

The Marine Radio Operator Certificate of Proficiency does not expire — it is a lifetime licence. Once you pass the assessment and your certificate is issued by ACMA, you are licensed for life.

Question 4

Is this licence recognised across all Australian states and territories?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The MROCP is a nationally recognised licence issued under ACMA's authority and is valid in all Australian states and territories, as well as for Australian-flagged vessels operating internationally.

Question 5

What is an MMSI number?

Accepted Answer

A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a unique nine-digit number assigned to your vessel. It is used by DSC-equipped radios to identify your vessel in distress alerts and routine calls. When you send a DSC distress signal, your MMSI is automatically transmitted to rescue authorities.

Question 6

Do I need an MMSI if I have a DSC radio?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If your vessel is fitted with a DSC-capable VHF radio, you must register an MMSI number and program it into the radio. Without a registered MMSI, your DSC distress alerts cannot be properly identified by rescue services.

Question 7

How do I register my MMSI in Australia?

Accepted Answer

MMSI registration in Australia is handled through AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority). The course covers the full registration process, including what information you need to provide and how to program your MMSI into your radio.

Question 8

Is MMSI registration covered in the course?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Module 4 of the course is dedicated entirely to MMSI registration — what it is, who needs one, how to register with AMSA, and how to link your MMSI to your vessel and DSC radio.

Question 9

How is the course delivered?

Accepted Answer

The course is delivered entirely online. Once you enrol, you receive immediate access to all six course modules. You can study at your own pace, on any device, from anywhere in Australia.

Question 11

What does the assessment involve?

Accepted Answer

Question 12

What happens after I pass the assessment?

Accepted Answer
